COEUR d'ALENE - An elderly man was taken into protective custody Thursday morning after barricading himself inside a room with a gun at a Coeur d'Alene apartment complex for seniors.

The resident of Bestland Senior Living Community, which is located at 606 E. Best Ave. in Coeur d'Alene, was taken away from the complex in an ambulance.

Coeur d'Alene Police Department Sgt. Christie Wood said the man had self-administered some medications.

"He had a handgun, but we resolved it peacefully," Wood said. "He was not injured."

He was taken to a hospital, where he was to remain held in protective custody until he's released by a court, she said.

He was isolated from other residents of the complex as police worked to resolve the incident, Wood said.

Police closed off the area near the apartment complex as the incident unfolded, and asked citizens to avoid the area as a precaution. The complex sits on the southwest corner of the Best and Seventh Street intersection.

Traffic on Best Avenue was blocked off at Sixth Place, and northbound traffic on Seventh Street was re-routed onto Borah Avenue.

Traffic was opened up again around 10:40 a.m.
