Montana Sen. Max Baucus will return to the Flathead Valley this week to carry out one of his signature “work days,” this time doing trail work in the North Fork Flathead drainage.

Baucus said he will be working alongside Montana Conservation Corps crews as a tie to his efforts over 40 years to protect the North Fork drainage.

Most recently, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee advanced Baucus’s North Fork Watershed Protection Act, which would prohibit mining and fossil fuel extraction in the North Fork. The legislation is reciprocating to a prohibition the British Columbia government imposed in the drainage north of the border.

“This work day is a full-circle moment for me because I’ve spent nearly 40 years working to protect the North Fork and the Montana jobs that depend on it,” Baucus said. “I’m looking forward to joining the Montana Conservation Corps for the day, hearing what matters to them most and working together to improve one of the most special places in Montana.”

It will be the 96th work day for Baucus, who aims to complete 100 by the time his final term in the Senate concludes at the end of next year.

Baucus will be working in the vicinity of the Glacier View trailhead Thursday morning.
