POST FALLS - A fire caused heavy damage to a Post Falls home during the lightning storm on Thursday night.
There were no injuries reported in the incident that was reported at 9:22 p.m. in the 400 block of South Corbin Road.
The cause of the fire was undetermined on Friday, but lightning may have been a factor.
"Initial reports from a neighbor reported that the residence was possibly struck by lightning," Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Warren Merritt said. "(An engine) had already been dispatched to a reported electrical problem at another residence next door.
"The fire lieutenant dismounting the fire engine was making an assessment of the (first reported) residence when the second house was spotted on fire. The (second) home was heavily damaged and the loss is likely to be quite extensive to the structure and contents."
Merritt said residents were inside the home when it caught fire and all were able to get out unharmed.
Firefighters did not have an estimated amount of damage.
He said it appears the home did not have a working smoke detector.
The owner of the first home reported losing about half of the home's power. Merritt didn't immediately know whether there was damage to that structure.
Crews from KCFR, Northern Lakes, Timberlake, Hauser Lake and Mica-Kidd Fire District assisted.
The fire was brought under control in an hour. There were no hydrants in the immediate area and a water supply was established with water tenders from KCFR and its mutual aid partners.
Firefighters remained on scene until 1:30 a.m. Friday.
Fire officials were at the scene on Friday afternoon conducting an investigation. Residents are encouraged to have working smoke detectors that are tested twice a year.
