How wet was it?

COEUR d'ALENE - For those who thought Friday's cool temps and steady rainfall felt more like fall than August, the record book agrees.

Between midnight and 4 p.m., 1.08 inches of rain fell in Coeur d'Alene - shattering the previous record for Aug. 2, which was 0.39 inches in 1974, climatologist Cliff Harris reported.

"We probably will triple it by tonight if we get a little more rain," Harris said Friday afternoon.

August is usually very dry in North Idaho, with an average of 1.23 inches of rain falling for the entire month.

Harris said since 1895, only 11 other August days have seen at least 1 inch of rainfall, with the most recent being 1.06 inches on Aug. 1, 1985.

Friday's downpour and cool high temperature (61 degrees, recorded around midnight) were a stark contrast to North Idaho's hot and dry July, which saw 17 days of 90-plus high temperatures and only 0.47 inches of rain for the month, Harris said.

Don't get used to the wet and cool conditions, though - it will be sunny and warm by Sunday and back in the 90s next week.

"A mass of cool air pushed down from Alaska, but that will move to the east and we'll warm up pretty quickly," Harris added.
