Baseball: Loggers finish 4th at State A tourney

HELENA — The Libby Loggers’ season came to an abrupt end with back-to-back losses to Laurel and Belgrade at the double-elimination Class A American Legion State Baseball Tournament Sunday.
The Loggers fell 6-5 to Laurel in the unbeaten semifinal, then lost 13-5 to Belgrade in a loser-out contest a few hours later. Libby entered Sunday on an eight-game winning streak.
Libby (38-22) led Laurel 5-3 after seven and a half innings, but the Dodgers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Daniel Stamper’s RBI single tied the score at 5 before Austin Cannon hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the go-ahead run.
Jared Winslow, Micah Germany and Oliver Grupenhoff each had two hits for the Loggers.
Libby also had a late lead against Belgrade before giving up 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Loggers finished fourth at the tournament, which concludes today with the championship game.
