Carl Hoiland peacefully passed away of natural causes Aug. 4, 2013, in his home. He was born at home in Rose Lake on Jan. 1, 1928. At the age of 3 he moved with his family to the Fourth of July Canyon, where he resided for the next 82 years.
He graduated from Rose Lake High School in 1946. And on Feb. 6, 1954, he married his lifetime sweetheart, Esther (Hojem) Hoiland. He grew up in the timber industry, initially working in his father’s sawmill where he acquired the nickname, “Slabwood.” Carl later owned his own logging business and followed this career path until his retirement in 1992.
He loved to dance and was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting, fishing and skiing. Carl took pride in everything he did, and strove to do the very best of his ability in all endeavors. He was uniquely gifted in the ability to repair and build anything for work or home. Through his example of daily living, he passed on to his four children the values of hard work, honesty, kindness and generosity, treating no person as a stranger.
Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore; and his parents, Thomas and Ethel Hoiland. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Esther Hoiland; and his children, Leonard (Nancy) of Osburn, Cara (Bill McEnany) of Grants Pass, Ore., Wade (Lisa) of Pullman, Wash., and Hiland (Cheri) of E. Wenatchee, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition he is survived by four brothers, Thomas, Arthur (Duke), Robert and Lawrence; and three sisters, Mary Cordes, Helen Jacquemin and Evelyn Rorie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
North Idaho was his home and his love of the forest and his large circle of family and friends is how he will always be remembered.
