Twenty-seven ladies were honored recently at Libby Care Center as “Gorgeous Grandmas,” an annual event to recognize the matriarchs of their families.

“It’s a chance for our grandmas to get all dolled-up and be recognized,” said Holly Sarbaum, the Care Center’s activities director. “It’s a big day for them.”

The ladies also were visited by Sterling, a Burmese Mountain dog, which recently won first place at an Oregon dog show.

Sterling, a large canine with long hair, was a hit with the ladies who are among the 81 residents of the center.

Sarbaum spoke of the benefits of seniors having close contact with pets.

“It’s proven to be a good relationship for both,” Sarbaum said.

The ladies’ special day was a reason for Judy Fagan, 70, to celebrate.

“This is a good thing for all of us,” said Fagan, a resident of the Care Center for 13 months. “This is my first Gorgeous Grandma’s Day, and I like it. The dog is nice, too.”

Sterling is a regular visitor to Libby Care Center, coming once a week to sit with residents and to have coffee with residents, Fagan said. “It’s good. He brightens our day.”

The ladies celebrated Gorgeous Grandma’s Day on July 23.
