Bayley misses cut at National championships
PINEHURST, N.C. - Derek Bayley, who will be a senior at Lakeland High in the fall, missed the cut at the 45th annual Trusted Choice Big "I" National Championship at the Dogwood Course at the Country Club of North Carolina after shooting a two round total of 162.
The cut was 155.
Bayley shot an opening round 81 on Monday, then followed up with an 80 on Tuesday.
Sam Stevens of Wichita, Kan., is leading the tournament with a two-under 140.
Registration underway for Fall Men's softball league
COEUR d'ALENE - The Coeur d'Alene Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the Men's Fall League.
Cost is $500 and includes player and sponsor fees. Entry deadline is Friday, Aug. 16.
League play will be Tuesday night doubleheaders as much as possible, with makeup games on Wednesday. Each team will play 10 games starting on Sept. 3.
Game schedules will be faxed to the team manager.
Checks can be made payable to City of Coeur d'Alene.
Eastern ranked third in preseason Coaches Poll
The Eastern Washington football team, which begins practices for the 2013 season today, has been ranked third in the preseason NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Coaches poll, announced Tuesday.
The Eagles, who won the 2010 FCS title and were a semifinalist in 2012, trail only No. 1 North Dakota State and No. 2 Montana State in the poll and are ranked just ahead of No. 4 Sam Houston State, the runner-up the past two seasons.
Eastern plays at Sam Houston State on Sept. 28 in a rematch of last year's 45-42 Bearkat win in the semifinals of the FCS playoffs. Montana State, which was defeated at home by the Eagles 27-24 last year, plays at Roos Field in Cheney on Nov. 9 in a game televised by ROOT Sports.
Cal Poly (No. 11), Northern Arizona (No. 18) and Montana (No. 22) are the other Big Sky Conference school ranked in the preseason poll.
Former Eastern athlete, coach passes away from heart attack
Harold "Hal" L. Warner, who was recently selected for induction into the Eastern Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away on Sunday after suffering a heart attack a week ago. He was 82.
Werner, a former Eastern student-athlete, assistant coach and head track and field coach, will be inducted posthumously on Oct. 5 at Eastern Washington, when the Eagles are scheduled to host Weber State.
He spent two seasons at Eastern as an athlete (1950-51, four years as head coach (1966-70) and another seven as an assistant coach.
A memorial service is being planned for next week in his hometown of Leavenworth, Wash., and he will be buried at the Cashmere Cemetery.
