COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene police Tuesday night arrested a 24-year-old Coeur d'Alene man for suspicion of a residential burglary in which gold and silver coins worth tens of thousands of dollars were taken.
Derek D. Hague was contacted by detectives in the area of 14th Street and Young Avenue, police said Wednesday.
He was booked into the Kootenai County jail on anticipated charges of burglary, robbery and malicious injury to property, with bail set at $50,000.
Hague allegedly ran from officers, and after a foot pursuit through area neighborhoods he was captured. The North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force helped police get Hague.
He also has been charged with felony possession of drugs, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor obstructing, said Sgt. Christie Wood.
The investigation of the burglary, at a home on the 900 block of 16th Street, is ongoing, she said.
Police and homeowner Marla Ross said Ross came home just before 1 a.m. Sunday to find an unfamiliar pickup truck with oversized tires backed up in the driveway.
The burglars had broken in through a door, and snatched one safe loaded with gold and silver coins. Another larger safe was in the driveway when Ross came home.
Ross, 54, confronted the two burglars, then one of the men jumped in her car and took off. The other got into the truck and sped away in the same direction.
Her physically disabled father was home and in bed, though awake, at the time of the burglary. His prescription medication also was stolen.
Police said the two safes had a combined $250,000 worth of gold and silver coins.
Her car was found on the 1900 block of E. Montana Avenue, just blocks from her home.
