Contractors will begin paving the Going-to-the-Sun Road between Avalanche and Logan creeks in Glacier National Park beginning the week of Aug. 12, Park officials announced Aug. 8.

Visitors can expect delays of 20 minutes during this time, which is expected to take about a week, depending on the weather. A pilot vehicle will be used to provide traffic control. Visitors heading for the Trail of the Cedars or Avalanche Lake trail may encounter a congested area for parking.

Rehabilitation work on the Sun Road also will continue on the east side of the Park, between Rising Sun and Siyeh Bend. Visitors can expect a 20 minute maximum day-time delay along that stretch, where crews will be working 24 hours a day, Monday through early Friday morning.

Public access between Rising Sun and Siyeh Bend will be limited after 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday nights. Logan Pass will be accessible from the west side during this time.

Sun Point, on the east side, is closed to the public and being used as a staging area for Sun Road rehabilitation work. The Sun Point picnic area and restroom facilities are not available, and the park shuttle does not stop at this location. Sun Point is expected to remain closed to the public for the next few years, or through rehabilitation work.

For more information about the Sun Road reconstruction project, visit online at www.wfl.fhwa.dot.gov/projects/mt/gtsr/ or call 406-888-7800.

The Park’s free shuttle system will operate through Labor Day. Transit centers are located at the T-intersection near Apgar on the west side and the St. Mary Visitor Center on the east side. For more information about the shuttle system, visit online at www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/shuttles.htm.
