A Kalispell man who turned himself in after allegedly stabbing a man who was visiting with his ex-girlfriend has pleaded not guilty to a pair of assault charges.

Scott Peter Bolt Jr., 19, is charged with two counts of felony assault with a weapon after the July 17 incident.

According to a court document, Bolt and his girlfriend had broken up after he found out she recently had been in a relationship with another man.

Bolt allegedly spoke to police without an attorney present and said that on the day of the attack he had hidden in the grass outside the First Street West apartment he shared with his now-ex-girlfriend, and saw her go inside with another man.

At that point, he allegedly went to his vehicle, got his hunting knife, and went inside, pushing past the woman and attacking the man, punching him with the knife in his hand, slicing him several times on the head and neck.

Bolt then allegedly told the man to leave. He then approached the woman with the knife in his hand, but nothing else is alleged to have happened. At that point, Bolt called police and went outside, waiting for officers to show up and arrest him.

Cory Clarke with the Kalispell Police Department reported Bolt was cooperative, but was “not 100 percent forthcoming,” downplaying the importance of the knife.

The victim walked to a nearby convenience store after the attack, and it was the clerk who told him he had been stabbed and called for an ambulance.

“Initially he refused medical treatment, telling medical responders on the scene that he was fine,” Clarke said. “Officers looked at him and told him he was far from fine.”

The man was transported to the emergency room, where he was treated and released.

Bolt faces up to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000 if he is convicted of both charges. He is currently incarcerated in the Flathead County Detention Center, where his bond was initially set at $50,000 before being reduced to $40,000 at his initial hearing.

The next hearing in Bolt's case is set for Sept. 18.
