COEUR d'ALENE - A design for the Fourth Street pedestrian entrance to McEuen Park has been selected.

From more than 170 submissions, New Mexico artist Howard Meehan's "Under the Rainbow" was picked by a volunteer citizens committee and approved by city officials.

His arch design is interlaced color-changing cables strung between two pillars and forming an arch. The design is intended to resemble a rainbow.

It will rise 30 feet high and stretch 60 feet across.

"That's a pretty big piece," said Steve Anthony, the city's recreation director.

The budget for the entrance is $110,000, he said.

The city hopes to have it up by Christmas, and construction will begin this month.

"Having the lights on year round will add to the ambiance of the park," Anthony said. "You can program the lights for the different seasons."

The citizens committee liked the openness of the design, and that it looked attractive from multiple angles, he said.

"It appealed to the younger people on the committee," he said. "The other submissions were more traditional."

Meehan has completed more than 35 mixed media public art projects throughout the U.S.
