Entrance fees to Glacier National Park will be waived on Sunday, Aug. 25 to celebrate the 97th birthday of the National Park Service.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the park and participate in a wide range of ranger-led activities including guided hikes, evening programs and boat tours.

On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act that created the National Park Service and mandated the agency “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.”

Today, the National Park Service cares for 401 sites throughout the country.

Visitors to Glacier Park are encouraged to visit the Discovery Cabin in the Apgar Village to learn about the adaptations of Glacier’s predators and prey.

Sunday is the last day the Discovery Cabin will be open to the public for the 2013 season.

Various ranger-led hikes are available including the John’s Lake Loop Hike, an easy 3-mile walk lasting two hours. The park’s ranger-led activity schedule can be found online at http://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/inforequest/inforequest3.cfm.

Additional fee-free days for 2013 include Sept. 28 (National Public Lands Day) and Nov. 9-11 (honoring veterans on Veterans Day weekend).

For more information about fee-free days or passes, visit http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm or contact Glacier at 406-888-7800.
