Early morning fishing works best

Fishing early mornings has been productive with smaller dry fly attractors, said Pat Way of Northwest Outfitters in Coeur d'Alene.
"Size 12 to 14 hopper imitations, parachute ants and J.C. (originator of the fly) Specials have been producing," he said. "As the sun gets high and air temperatures warm up, small tandem nymph rigs are the best option."
Downsize leaders and tippets to 5x or 6x (size of the line the fly is tied to) and fish size 18 or 20 pheasant tails and zebra midges.
"Look for evening caddis and PMD (pale morning dun) hatches between 4 p.m. and dark," Way said. "Concentrate on swinging soft hackles in the tail out or making soft presentations with PMD or caddis emergers."
As always in late summer, the key is to be there early, Way said.
You can get some good fishing in before lunch and avoid the recreational floaters, he said. Fishing should improve even more with cooler temperatures in the forecast.
Bud Frasca of North West Classic Tackle in Hayden said the water is low, but fishing is still good on the Coeur d'Alene and St. Joe rivers.
"Water temperatures are rising so you've got to be careful when you fish," he said. "When you land a fish, you've got to revive it enough to let it go and live."
Grasshoppers, crickets, beetles and ants are all working well. Streamers also continue to work.
"You've got to be stealthy and careful not to spook the fish," Frasca said.
Frasca said the hot summer has taken a toll on fishing.
"So you need to look for oxygenated waters," he said. "Look for ripples going into holes or spring-fed holes where the water is colder."
Tributaries of the rivers such as Pritchard, Shoshone or Independence creeks are good bets. Frasca said the Little North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene may be too low and the fish likely have gotten spooky there.
"A lot have probably moved on to the main river," he said.
Frasca said the bass and pike fishing are both doing well on Coeur d'Alene and Hayden lakes.
Those fish should be 15 to 20 feet deep. The rocky points may be your best bet.
Some anglers say the next month will be the best time for kokanee fishing.
"Some of them are going 16 to 17 inches," Frasca said.
