POST FALLS — Two semi trucks collided in the parking lot of the Flying J Truck Stop Wednesday morning, resulting in the hazardous spill of 150 gallons of diesel fuel.

A truck owned by Smokey Point Distributing, out of Arlington, Wash., was driving through the south parking lot when a truck owned by KM Transport, out of Bowling Green, Ky., backed his trailer into the first truck, according to Post Falls police officer Jason Dewitt.

Because the accident occurred on private property, Dewitt said that no citation would be issued, and the names of the drivers were not released.

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue responded to the scene to contain and clean up the spill.

Firefighter Jeff Piephoff crouched under the accident with a large bladder designed to catch the diesel that was spilling from a 4-inch by 20-inch gouge in the fuel tank of one of the semis.

He said the $600 worth of fuel would be pumped into a container and disposed of. Still, about half of the fuel spilled across the parking lot, and was being cleaned up with absorbent materials.

KCFR Captain Rick Clutter said the absorbent materials were owned by the state, which will likely bill the responsible trucking company for the cost of the cleanup.
