MOSES LAKE - A routine call for service turned into an act of kindness from two Moses Lake police officers.

On July 22, Officer Juan Rodriguez was dispatched to a public service call in the 1000 block of Marina Drive. An elderly woman told Rodriguez she was concerned about fumes in her apartment from a fumigation earlier in the day. The woman did not want to stay there because of a medical issue.

Rodriguez attempted to find an alternative place for her to stay, contacting the woman's family and friends, but nothing was found and no emergency shelter was available for the night.

Rodriguez and his work partner, Officer Adam Munro, ultimately pooled their own money together, paying for a hotel room for the woman. Their actions were commended at the Moses Lake City Council meeting Tuesday.

"This act of kindness reflects very favorably on our organization. Your actions here have exceeded the normal expectation of a police officer's duty," Chief Dave Ruffin said. "Through your efforts, you both have demonstrated professionalism, service and compassion; three of the four values that our organization recognizes as the foundation for everything that we aspire to do."

Both Rodriguez and Munro were in attendance at the council meeting, supported by family members and fellow officers.
