COEUR d'ALENE - A 29-year-old Coeur d'Alene man has been arrested following a hostage call hoax Monday morning that tied officers up for a couple hours.
Roger L. Lane, of Coeur d'Alene, was arrested because of a separate incident a half an hour later. In that incident, he allegedly tried to get into a woman's vehicle as she was parked in a construction area at South 7th Street and Mullan Avenue.
Lane, police said, approached the woman - who is nine months pregnant - as she sat waiting in her car to give her husband his lunch.
Lane allegedly opened the passenger-side door and asked if he could get in.
She told him no and to shut the door, which he did, but he then allegedly re-opened it and tried to get in.
The woman's husband, who was working at the construction site, came to the rescue. He also brought another man.
"Lane shoved the husband and told them he would fight both of them," said Sgt. Christie Wood.
Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Wayne Longo, who was exiting a meeting at City Hall at the time, responded and was on scene to handcuff and detain Lane.
Lane then bolted with handcuffs on, but fell while running.
He was taken into custody for battery, trespassing and resisting-obstructing police, Wood said.
On Monday morning, police said Lane allegedly called to report that a man with a gun had taken four women hostage inside a residence near the intersection of South 10th Street and Mullan Avenue.
Police were on scene in that incident for two hours before realizing the call was a hoax.
Police described the caller as "mentally handicapped" on Monday, but didn't identify him as Lane.
Wood said a couple different officers spoke to Lane as the stand-off dragged on.
"They were able to determine through further conversation that he was unreliable and not making sense," Wood said.
Police then called the landlord of the multi-unit residential building at the center of the action to find out who lived there.
"They were also able to obtain keys to the residence, and after they entered they discovered no one home," Wood said.
