Former Glacier multi-sport standout Shelton Todd will attend Sacramento State University to throw the javelin for the Hornets in 2013-14. Todd was originally committed to play football at Montana Tech, but changed course late in the year.

“It’s kinda a whole different world,” Todd said. “It should be a lot easier on my body. It’s in a Division I conference against a lot better competition. And, I’ll be getting down to California and experiencing more.”

Todd was one of a trio of javelin standouts for the Wolfpack this spring, throwing a personal-best mark of 192 feet, 2 inches at the state meet in Bozeman. He finished third behind teammates Todd Ogden and Taylor Hulslander.

Coincidentally, Hulslander is also throwing javelin in Division I for the Air Force Academy and Ogden, a senior at Glacier and three-time state champion, is among the top recruits in the nation.

“It’s exciting to see him finish up his career the way he did,” Glacier boys track coach Arron Deck said of Todd.

“Overall, he’s a great character kid. As far as potential goes, I wouldn’t be surprised next year if he’s throwing 220 (feet) ... He’s dedicated and I know he’s going to do well in school. It’s a great fit. Sac State’s getting a quality young man.”

He’s committed to a program with a strength in javelin. The Hornets’ Jesse Elvrom finished sixth at nationals last season to earn All-America honors.

Todd will major in kinesiology and exercise science in Sacramento, with plans of being a chiropractor following college. He leaves for California today and plans to start training Sept. 2. The outdoor track season begins in March.
