COEUR d'ALENE - Jeremiah Gagnon scored an unassisted goal in the 75th minute to lift the defending state 4A champion Sandpoint Bulldogs into a 3-3 tie with the 5A Coeur d'Alene Vikings on Saturday in the nonleague high school boys soccer season opener for both teams.

"It was a very good game, back and forth," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "Both coaches weren't too impressed with giving up three goals."

Coeur d'Alene led 2-0 on goals by Matt Hulquist and Braden Ridgewell, then Aaron Crossingham scored off a corner kick by Gagnon in the final minute of the first half for Sandpoint. The Bulldogs tied it midway through the second half on a goal by Amos Crossingham.

"We played well, but we didn't play great," Lake said. "We're disappointed in the goals we gave up, the goals we gave up were on mistakes. I like opening with Sandpoint, and I'm sure (Sandpoint coach) Adam (Tajan) would agree. They are very good, very skilled, very fast."

Coeur d'Alene plays host to Lakeland on Tuesday. Sandpoint plays host to Stillwater Christian on Friday.

POST FALLS - Timmy Mueller recorded a hat trick for the shorthanded and defending state 5A champion Trojans, which beat the Hawks in the nonleague opener for both schools.

"It was definitely a good win, especially with the group of guys we had today," Post Falls coach Gabe Lawson said. "We had a couple of players that didn't have enough practices to play today and had to give another one of our subs to the JV so they could field a team. We were able to manage a win, which was good because Lakeland played really well."

Mueller, the returning Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year, played through a back injury for most of the game.

"He'd tweaked his back about five days ago," Lawson said. "But he got taken down late in the game, and it actually popped it back in. He was actually happy because it cured the pain he'd been in for the last five days."

Austin Garitone scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute for Lakeland.

On Tuesday, Post Falls travels to Moscow and Lakeland plays at Coeur d'Alene.

First half - 1, PF, Timmy Mueller (unassisted), 10:00. 2, LL, Austin Garitone (unassisted), 20:00. 3, PF, Mueller (Pierce Johnson), 31:00. Second half - 4, PF, Mueller (Max Chekota), 50:00.

RATHDRUM - Erica Simpson had an assist and scored a goal, leading the Trojans past the Hawks in the nonleague opener for both at Rotary Field.

"We came out really, really strong to score three goals in the first 15 minutes," Post Falls coach Briggs Anderson said. "For a first game, our fitness level became an issue in the second half, which is expected, but overall, I'm really pleased. We played really well."

Angelique Wetherelt had seven saves for Lakeland, which hosts Lake City on Sept. 5.

"Our youth played out in the first 20 minutes," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "They played more physical that we did in the first 20 minutes, but once we got through that, we started to play more competitive. We've still got some work to do to play with a top-notch team like Post Falls, but they kept competing through the entire match."

On Tuesday, Post Falls will host Moscow and Lakeland travels to Bonners Ferry.

First half - 1, PF, Anisha Nickerson (Erica Simpson), 3:00. 2, PF, Alli Crain (unassisted), 8:00. 3, PF, Simpson (unassisted), 14:00. Second half - none.

Shots on goal - PF 10, LL 2.
