COEUR d’ALENE — A 35-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday when Coeur d’Alene police officers were responding to a report of a hit-and-run crash in the neighborhood south of East Sherman Avenue.
The shooting took place at 8 a.m. at a home near the intersection of 14th Street and Young Avenue, around the corner from the scene of the earlier crash in which a vehicle struck an Avista utility pole, severing it.
Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Christie Wood said Idaho State Police detectives are investigating the shooting.
The dead man’s identity was not released Sunday, pending notification of next of kin. Wood said he was from the Dalton Gardens/Coeur d’Alene area.
Additional details — the number of officers involved, how many shots were fired and if the dead man was armed — were also not released by police.
Josh Weeks, a nearby neighbor, said he didn’t hear any altercation, but not long after awakening Sunday, he did hear gunshots.
“There were definitely three shots fired,” Weeks told The Press. “All our windows were open.”
Weeks said he went to the window and looked out, “I heard the girl that lives there. She sounded hysterical.”
The woman was screaming, accusing someone of shooting someone in her house, Weeks said.
“She was obviously pretty upset,” he said. “Two minutes later, the police tape was up. There were no sirens. I thought that was odd.”
No police officers were injured in the incident.
