Golf: Doorn among leaders in Great Falls

GREAT FALLS — Whitefish’s Art Doorn is part of a three-way tie atop a crowded leaderboard after the first round of the Great Falls Invitational golf tournament at Anaconda Hills on Monday.
Doorn shot a 70 to end the day in the top spot along with Billings Senior’s Sean Bensen and Great Falls C.M. Russell’s Easton Enott. Three golfers are one stroke back at 71 and Glacier’s Cody Sherrill and Kevin Talcott are part of a group of five that is two strokes back at 72.
Flathead’s Joseph Potkonjak is three shots off the pace at 73 and teammate Ryan Keenan is four back at 74. Whitefish’s Cooper Donahue is also in the mix with a first-round score of 76.
The tournament includes all 14 Class AA golf teams along with Whitefish and Havre from Class A.
Billings Senior leads the team standings with a score of 286, Billings West is second at 293 and Bozeman is third at 294. Glacier is fifth at 298, Flathead is 10th at 311 and Whitefish is 11th at 316.
Glacier’s Teigen Avery shot a 78 to finish the opening round in fourth place. She’s two strokes back of leader Haily Hoagland of Butte (76) and one shot behind Billings Senior’s Kortney McNeil and Sammy Walter (77).
Whitefish’s Erin Tabish shot a 79 to finish three strokes off the pace and Flathead’s Jenna Jensen is four shots back at 80.
Butte leads the team standings with a score of 322. Billings West is second at 330 and Missoula Hellgate is third at 333. Whitefish is seventh with a score of 360 and Flathead is eighth at 363. Glacier does not have enough golfers to qualify for a team score.
The tournament concludes today at Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls.

Columbia Falls Invitational at Ronan
RONAN — Jaylin Kenney and the Polson girls golf team ran away with first place at the Columbia Falls Invitational at Ronan Monday.
Kenney shot a 78 to beat second-place Darby McNally of Frenchtown by 13 strokes. Polson’s Heather Frank was third with a 95 and teammates Peyton Anderson and Lauren DuPuis carded 98s in a tie for fourth place.
Polson shot 369 as a team, beating Frenchtown by 40 strokes. Columbia Falls finished third with a score of 496. Baylee Brinton led the Wildkats with a 116, which was 10th overall.
Hamilton won the boys’ competition with a 314 while Polson was second with a 340. Frenchtown, 362, and Stevensville, 415, finished third and fourth and Columbia Falls, 427, was fifth.
Hamilton’s Josh Heath shot a 75 to claim the individual medal, edging Frenchtown’s Chris Delaney by one stroke.
Polson’s Alex Killian and Ryan Thurman each shot 84 to tie for seventh and Polson’s Reno Lindesmith and Dalton Noyes were two shots behind in a tie for ninth.
Columbia Falls hosts the Flathead and Glacier junior varsity teams today in West Glacier. Polson is back in action Thursday at the Browning Invitational in East Glacier.
