RATHDRUM - A search of a Rathdrum home on Friday led to the arrest of a couple on felony drug and injury to child charges and the evacuation of neighbors for six hours while pipe bombs were removed.
Leonard J. Crandall, 40, and his wife, Shaylynn L. Crandall, 37, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia.
Their children, a 4-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, were released to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
Additional charges related to the pipe bombs are expected to be filed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Rathdrum Police officers and North Idaho Drug Task Force members served a narcotics search warrant at the home at 15217 N. Alabama St. in Rathdrum on the south side of the city just east of Highway 41 at 3:45 p.m.
"We received a complaint about some recent drug activity going on in the house," said Rathdrum Police Chief Kevin Fuhr.
After meth residue and paraphernalia were found, the Crandalls were arrested without incident.
As officers continued to search, they discovered what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the garage and two jars of an unknown chemical. Officers then exited the residence, set a perimeter around the neighborhood and had neighbors evacuate their homes.
The Spokane Bomb Squad was called upon to remove the pipe bomb materials. Both a robot and a bomb squad member in a protective suit were used during the incident.
Coeur d'Alene Fire's hazardous materials team responded to assist with the chemicals.
During the search, three pipe bombs and additional drug evidence were recovered.
Fuhr said the initial investigation did not reveal any specific planned uses for the pipe bombs. He said it appears the drugs were for personal use and not distribution.
Fuhr said Leonard Crandall has an extensive criminal history, including several arrests for drugs and DUI.
