September’s book club meetings will take readers from South Africa to Hawaii to historic Montana.
The Flathead County Library Friends of the Library book group meets Sept. 10 to discuss Eleanor Morse’s “White Dog Fell From the Sky.”
In apartheid South Africa in 1977, medical student Isaac Muthethe is forced to flee his country after witnessing a friend’s murder. He is smuggled into Botswana, where he is hired by a young American woman, Alice Mendelssohn, who abandoned her Ph.D. studies to follow her husband to Africa. When Isaac goes missing, Alice must search for him, and her life is changed forever.
The book club meets at 5 p.m. in the basement meeting room at the main library in Kalispell. All are welcome to attend.
After a summer hiatus, the Flathead Valley Community College Reading Group reconvenes Sept. 11 to discuss two books: Frank Delaney’s “Ireland: A Novel” and “Honolulu” by Alan Brennert.
In “Ireland,” a storyteller arrives at 9-year-old Ronan O’Mara’s home in the Irish countryside. For three evenings, the old gentleman enthralls his local audience with narratives of foolish kings, fabled saints and Ireland’s enduring accomplishments. The storyteller moves on, but those nights change Ronan forever.
“Honolulu” tells the story of Jin, a Korean woman who moves to Hawaii in search of a better life. Instead of the affluent young husband and chance at an education she is promised, she is quickly married off to a poor, embittered laborer who takes out his frustrations on his new wife.
The group meets at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The only cost involved is the purchase of the books.
For more information or to sign up, call Sharon Randolph at 756-3981.
The Montana History Book Club meets Sept. 12 to discuss “We Pointed Them North: Recollections of a Cowpuncher,” by E.C. Abbott and Helena H. Smith.
This memoir of a Montana cowboy captures both the fun and the hard times of driving cattle and trying to make a living in early Montana. Abbott drove Texas longhorns to Montana in the 1870s, and then stayed on and married a daughter of pioneer Granville Stuart.
The book is out of print but is available through the Flathead County Library System and used book outlets.
The club meets at 6:30 p.m. in the basement conference room at the Museum at Central School, 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. The public is welcome.

Bad Rock Book Discussion Group discusses an American classic at its Sept. 19 meeting.
Willa Cather’s “My Antonia” is the story of Antonia Shimerda, who arrives on the Nebraska frontier with her family of Bohemian immigrants. The story commemorates the spirit and courage of pioneers who helped build America.
The group meets at 7 p.m. at Bad Rock Books, located on Nucleus Avenue in Columbia Falls. Books are available at the bookstore or at the library.
All are welcome to attend. Treats will be provided.
For more information, call Carol Rocks at 892-0515.
The Whitefish Library Book Discussion Group meets Sept. 25 to discuss “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver.
The suspenseful novel set in present-day Appalachia tells the story of a young wife and mother on a failing farm who experiences something she cannot explain. Her discovery energizes various competing factions — including religious leaders, climate scientists, environmentalists and politicians — trapping her in the center of the conflict and ultimately opening up her world.
The group meets at 6 p.m. in the Whitefish Community Library meeting room. All are welcome to attend.
