COEUR d'ALENE - Fire investigators say arson was the cause of a car fire in the downtown area of Coeur d'Alene on Wednesday morning.

A 1993 Chevy Lumina parked at a home on Second Street between Wallace and Indiana was destroyed. When the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department responded at 5:44 a.m., the car was fully involved.

No injuries were reported.

"Through the investigation and a witness statement, we were able to rule everything else out (except arson)," said Bobby Gonder, fire investigator.

Gonder said a neighbor saw a suspect or suspects, but he declined to comment on details of the witness statements.

"The investigation is progressing at a good pace," Gonder said.

Gonder declined to comment on whether the suspect knows the victim or if it appeared to be a random act, on the description of the suspect and whether the suspect left on foot or in a vehicle.

"The witness statements match our investigation," Gonder said.

Gonder said he didn't know if the vehicle was locked. He said the fire started in the interior of the vehicle.

Gonder estimated the car is worth between $5,000 and $6,000.

A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information on the case. Those with information should call the Idaho State Fire Marshal arson tip line at (877) 75-ARSON. Callers may remain anonymous.
