Crashes pile up on valley's slippery roads

Severe winter weather led to a host of crashes and traffic snarls in the Flathead Valley over the past two days.
Flathead County dispatch logs indicated there were 34 crashes — including five hit-and-run accidents — reported between 6:26 a.m. Monday and 2:22 p.m. Tuesday.
At 3:52 p.m. Monday, three crashes occurred at nearly the same time along U.S. 93 South near Willow Glen Drive — one at the intersection, one to the north and one to the south. Just a few minutes later, traffic was blocked on North Main Street at Idaho Street.
A pair of motorists involved in a crash on 10th Avenue West and Fifth Street West drew a police response when a caller reported both men seemed to be very angry.
Montana Highway Patrol records showed 47 crashes of various types across the Kalispell district between Monday morning and Tuesday morning. The Kalispell district includes Flathead, Lincoln and Lake counties.
Slippery conditions Monday evening also led to a traffic jam at underpass hill on U.S. 2 East, where 15 vehicles were stuck and unable to get to the top. The westbound lanes were both temporarily blocked and were only cleared with the assistance of employees from Herzog Custom Homes, who helped push the stuck vehicles up the hill.
Evergreen Fire Rescue personnel also responded to U.S. 2 East to assist with traffic control at 5:30 Monday night and a transformer blew at North Meridian Road and Three Mile Drive a half hour earlier, knocking out power in the area for a split second.
