COEUR d'ALENE - Police detectives arrested a 55-year-old Coeur d'Alene resident after he admitted to spraying WD-40 on the windows of vehicles parked in front of his home.

Dean Morra told police he was angry at people who parked in front of his house at 802 E. Front Ave. One of those people allegedly had her car vandalized by Morra and reported it to the Coeur d'Alene Police Department. The information provided by the resident led detectives to conduct a sting using an unmarked city vehicle.

"We have those resources available and when we are certain we have the possibility of capturing someone on video surveillance it's a no-brainer to use those resources," Sgt. Christie Wood told The Press Tuesday. "In this instance it was a perfect use of those resources."

Last Tuesday, the unmarked city vehicle was parked in front of Morra's home and monitored with video surveillance. When detectives returned later in the day, they noticed a filmy substance on the windows and fresh scratches on the driver's side and hood of the car.

According to a Cd'A police press release, when detectives reviewed the footage, Morra was "visible on video damaging the car." A local body shop estimated that repairing the damage would cost more than $1,000.

Law enforcement returned to Morra's home the next day and questioned him about the vandalism.

"Morra initially denied doing any damage to the vehicle," the press release states. "But when detectives made him aware of the video surveillance he admitted to the vandalism. He stated he sprayed WD-40 on the female victim's vehicle several times."

Although the woman was the only one to report vehicle vandalism to law enforcement, Wood said there may be other cases that have not been reported.

"She (the female victim) told detectives she knew of people who have had run-ins with Morra," Wood said. "She also believes that there have been other vehicles damaged."

Morra was arrested for felony malicious injury to property and taken to jail.
