Cold weather brings eagles

COEUR d'ALENE - Tuesday was sunny, cold and windy.
"That means many eagles were soaring and I typically don't count flying eagles," said Carrie Hugo, a U.S. Bureau of Land Management wildlife biologist.
She made a few exceptions Tuesday when she did her bald eagle count in the Wolf Lodge Bay area of Lake Coeur d'Alene.
The numbers are increasing, she said, but are still less than half of last year's count at this time.
Tuesday she saw a total of 57, which included 46 adults, 10 juvenile eagles, and one unknown.
Last year, she counted 121 total, with 84 adults and 37 juveniles.
"Let's see if this cold snap this week freezes some lakes up north and sends a big pulse our way," Hugo said.
