WANAPUM DAM - Grant PUD warns that boaters and fishermen near Wanapum Dam need to be aware of fluctuating river elevations now through Dec. 5.

River elevations will be lowered by as much as six feet during this time, presenting potentially volatile water conditions or boat-stranding in sections of the Columbia River. Anyone on the river above Wanapum Dam should use extreme caution.

According to the PUD, previously unknown hazards for boaters may be exposed and some boat ramps may be inaccessible. Boaters should pay attention to surroundings, avoid mooring near shorelines, avoid boating in shallow water, watch boat speeds and use safe boating practices.

Grant PUD maintains hourly water level and boat launch information on its website. This tool offers information on how much water is needed to launch boats at all of the ramps in our area.

Boaters should note that this information has a one-hour delay. The same information is offered over the telephone Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. by calling Grant PUD at 1(888) 422-3199.

According to Public Information Officer Thomas Stredwick, these fluctuating river conditions are scheduled as a requirement of Grant PUD's federal license to operate Priest Rapids and Wanapum Dams and allow for a variety of tests and surveys related to fish.

In order to provide an enjoyable boating and recreation experience, every effort is made to maintain water levels on Priest Rapids and Wanapum reservoirs.
