Police have a person in custody after a vehicle chase that took place overnight in the northern section of Kootenai County. Sheriff Ben Wolfinger and Lt. Stu Miller report that the suspect fired shots at pursuing law enforcement officers before crashing the fleeing vehicle and leaving the scene on foot.

The incident began just before midnight when a Spirit Lake police officer attempted to stop a white Ford SUV for a traffic violation. The SUV failed to stop and the officer initiated a pursuit of the vehicle.

The sheriff's office and Idaho State Police were called to assist with the pursuit as the vehicle fled east on Highway 54 from Spirit Lake at speeds near 100 mph. A deputy sheriff joined in the pursuit near Clagstone Road and the suspect fired a gun at the pursuing officer and deputy, striking both vehicles.

Near the traffic circle on Highway 54, near Farragut State Park, the SUV turned southbound onto Goodhope Road and eventually crashed into a woodshed at the end of Goodhope Road. The SUV then caught fire as the suspect fled on foot.

Numerous resources including the Idaho State Police, a KCSO K9 unit, Spokane County Air1 and the KCSO multi-agency SWAT Team were called in to assist with the search for the suspect.

The KCSO multi-agency SWAT team located the suspect around 8 a.m. and took him into custody.

The Idaho State Police will be taking the lead on the investigation since the Sheriff’s Office was involved in the pursuit. Area residents are being told to resume their normal activities. Investigators will be remaining on scene to process and collect evidence.
