POST FALLS - Prior to this season, only one current member of the Lake City High girls basketball team had played in a winning 5A Inland Empire League game.

That all changed Tuesday night, when Lake City snapped a 14 game-losing streak in league play, beating Post Falls 47-37 at The Arena.

Hailey Jackson scored 12 points, Madi Farrell added 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots, and Clarissa Smith had 10 points and 16 rebounds for Lake City (4-0, 1-0 5A IEL).

"I'm proud of them," second-year Lake City coach Bryan Kelly said. "This is a big win to get us confidence. We're still young, with four sophomores. It was a big win for us - very proud of the girls."

Lake City's last league win was a 59-30 rout of Lewiston on Jan. 14, 2011. Jackson, a senior guard, is the lone player left from that team.

Smith, a 5-foot-8 junior listed as a guard, did plenty of dirty work inside as well. Along with her double-double, she also had two steals.

"Clarissa Smith was just huge," Kelly said. "She just brings energy. She's not very tall. She's a '4' but she's more of a '3.' She's very physical, she has a good nose for the ball, and just goes and gets it. She's stepped up her game tremendously since last year. That effort was what propelled us in the second half."

Lake City scored the game's first eight points, and led 12-3 after one quarter. Post Falls (2-2, 0-2) had seven turnovers in the first quarter, but cut down on the miscues after that.

Post Falls pulled to within 22-20 at halftime, and took its only lead of the game on a 3-pointer by Shayna Allert to open the third quarter. Lake City weathered the comeback, and led by as much as 16 in the fourth quarter.

"The second half we played extremely, extremely hard," Kelly said. "We talked about playing smarter in the second half. We were in foul trouble in the first half, and I thought some girls off the bench stepped in. Whitney Meier did a great job coming off the bench, Hailey Jackson did a tremendous job when Natalie (Wheelock) got into foul trouble."

Allert, one of the few returnees from last year's state title team, led Post Falls with 11 points. Sam Runkle, another returnee, added seven points and nine rebounds, and Kim Reynolds scored all seven of her points in the first half.

On a cold night, cold shooting stalled Post Falls - the Trojans were 13 of 47 from the field, 8 of 20 from the line.

"I thought our effort was much better," Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. "Our intensity level was much better than the other night (in a loss at Lewiston) Obviously we still have some deficiencies we are working on."

"Post Falls was scrappy; they were outworking us in the first half," Kelly said.

Allert had praise for senior guard Lexi Smith, the lone returning starter.

"Lexi always plays hard," he said. "She just turned it up a notch, and did everything she could to keep us in that game. She covers up so many of our mistakes defensively, just by herself."

"I thought Lake City has improved a ton," Allert added. "Bryan's doing a great job with those kids."

Post Falls plays host to Kamiakin of Kennewick, Wash., on Saturday. Lake City is scheduled to travel to Northwest Christian of Lacey, Wash., on Tuesday.

Lake City 12 10 11 14 - 47

POST FALLS - Allert 11, Ellison 4, Yarber 0, King 0, Smith 3, Anderson 1, Bodman 2, Runkle 7, Kyle 2, Reynolds 7, McDermott 0.
