Jayde Brown, 21, could spend up to 14 years in jail for stabbing a 20-year-old man in the chest on Sherman Avenue in October.

Brown accepted a plea bargain agreement on Nov. 15. In exchange for a guilty plea, the charge of attempted first degree murder was reduced to battery with the intent to commit a serious felony.

"The agreement provides us the opportunity to argue for an appropriate amount of imprisonment given the facts of the case," County Prosecutor Barry McHugh told The Press Friday.

In addition to charges being reduced, the deadly weapons enhancement - which requires an additional 15 years of imprisonment if convicted - was dropped by the county prosecutor.

When questioned by law enforcement in the days following the Oct. 2 stabbing, Brown told police he knew the victim, Zackary Brown, "from using drugs in the past." The two men are not related.

"He (Jayde Brown), explained that he was told by 'some dangerous people' to take some of Zack's stuff and bring it to them," a summary of law enforcement interviews with Brown states. "He elaborated that he was told to take a bag from Zack."

Law enforcement interviews with Zack, while he was recovering at Kootenai Health, confirm that the two males knew each other prior to the attack - with Zack telling detectives that Brown stole "all of the items" out of his backpack.

When the two encountered each other near the intersection of Sherman Avenue and 13th Street on Oct. 2, the alleged stolen property was at the center of a verbal altercation.

Police records indicate that Zack called Brown "a 'punk bitch' or something similar" and Brown responded by saying "something to the effect of 'You really wanna do this right now, you really wanna do this?'"

A few minutes later, as Zack continued along Sherman on his way to an appointment at the Port of Hope, Brown came out of the Coeur d'Alene Budget Saver Motel parking lot on a bicycle.

"The male (Brown) stuck out his hand as he passed Zack and hit Zack in the chest," the summary states. "Zack said he thought he was just punched at first but later noticed he was bleeding, eventually lost his vision and use of his arms."

When asked by investigators if he was sorry for his actions, Brown said he was and called it a "knee-jerk decision."

"I stabbed some guy that didn't need stabbed," Brown said.

Brown's sentencing is set for Jan. 10 in Kootenai County District Court.
