COEUR d'ALENE - The 22-year-old Priest River man who allegedly shot at law enforcement officers at least twice during a high-speed chase made his first appearance before a judge in Kootenai District Court Friday.

Dillen Endres appeared via closed circuit television from the county jail, and told Judge Scott Wayman he did not want to be represented by a lawyer in his upcoming trial. Wayman advised Endres that the felony counts he is facing, one for burglary and another for grand theft, carry possible sentences of 10 and 14 years respectively. The judge asked him a second time if he would like to seek legal counsel.

"I'm good," Endres said.

Police arrested Endres Thursday following an eight-hour manhunt that began when law enforcement officers in Spirit Lake attempted to pull over a vehicle that had been reported stolen. The driver of the stolen car, believed to be Endres, fired several shots during the chase, hitting two police vehicles. The stolen vehicle later crashed into a woodshed in Athol and burned. The driver fled on foot. Endres was arrested while walking about a mile from the site of the crash.

In court Friday, Judge Wayman strongly suggested several times that Endres should seek legal representation, or at least contact an attorney.

"To get me into more trouble," Endres said, cutting the judge off.

Endres declined multiple times to be represented by an attorney.

Endres also asked the judge how the charges could be filed against him if he was walking at the time of his arrest.

"I'm just reading the charges to you," Wayman said. "And I strongly encourage you to get a lawyer."

After informing Endres that he would be notified when a date was set for a preliminary hearing, discussion shifted to setting a bond amount.

The state requested bond of $150,000, citing prior instances when Endres failed to appear for court dates in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

"There's no point in posting a bond," Endres said, after Waymen set the bond amount the state requested.

Endres is charged with burglary, grand theft, and two misdemeanors: driving without privileges and failure to provide proof of insurance.

He faces an additional $2,000 bond on the charge of driving without privileges.
