Glacier’s Joshua Loyda and Jake Cirincione each won a pair of events to kick off the high school swimming season at the Kalispell Invitational at The Summitt on Saturday.

The Glacier pair led the team to a third place finish in the meet, also teaming with Nate Burnham and Tommy Briner to win the 200-yard medley relay.

“A lot of our new swimmers showed a lot of courage out there and improvement,” Glacier/Flathead swim coach David Lilliard said.

“They’ve done a lot in the first two weeks.”

The Flathead boys finished sixth.

The Bravettes were fifth and the Glacier girls sixth as a team.

“It was just a good indication of where they’re at,” Lilliard said. “For the most part it shows we’re out of shape. It’s early in the season, we have to start working hard and we’ll see results later.”

Loyda swam to emphatic victories in the 50 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. He touched the wall in 22.87 seconds in the 50 free to win by three seconds and 55.43 in the 100 back to win by nearly eight seconds.

Cirincione was also dominant, winning the 100 butterfly in 55.46 and the 200 individual medley, the latter by 16 seconds. The Wolfpack medley relay finished in 1:49.68.

Burnham finished third in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke for Glacier. Briner was fourth in the 100 breaststroke and the boys 400 freestyle relay finished second to Hellgate. The Glacier boys 200 freestyle relay finished fifth, one place ahead of Flathead’s B team.

Flathead’s David Sitagata placed fourth in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 27.59 seconds and teammate Ethan Timm finished sixth in the race in 28.11. The Flathead boys placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Three Bravettes finished in the top six, with McKenzie Lane fifth in the 200 freestyle. Maggie Mulcahy was fifth in the mixed 500 freestyle and Sara Hensen finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

Glacier’s Emma Hornby finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 28.03 and the Glacier girls finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.

“It was what I would expect for the beginning of the season,” Lilliard said. “We’ve got time. We’re in a good spot, working on technique and getting our new swimmers ready.”

The Flathead and Glacier teams are back in the pool next weekend for the Butte Invitational.
