SPOKANE - A Mattawa woman died and eight people, including a Moses Lake man, were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday on Interstate 90 about eight miles west of Spokane.

According to the State Patrol, a 44-year-old Walla Walla man lost control of his pickup truck heading east on an icy overpass crossing Medical Lake-Four Lakes Road about 8 a.m. Wednesday. The truck crossed the median and headed into oncoming traffic, and hitting a semi-truck before driving over an embankment and coming to rest on a county road.

After colliding with the pickup, the semi-truck driver, from British Columbia, continued across the median into eastbound lanes, colliding with a 2009 Toyota Prius, driven by Marvin C. Williamson, 61, of Moses Lake, and killing a passenger in the Prius.

The passenger was identified as Herlinda Alzata-Barrera, 38, of Mattawa. She reportedly died at the scene, according to the State Patrol.

Williamson and a second passenger, Lorenzo Alzate-Rojas, 15, of Mattawa, were taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane for undisclosed injuries.

The semi-truck also collided with one other vehicle before driving through the guardrail and down an embankment, according to the State Patrol. In total, eight people were injured in the crash.

Both eastbound lanes of I-90 were closed for several hours as the incident was under investigation. Both lanes were reopened about 2 p.m.

All involved were wearing seatbelts, including the woman who died.

The State Patrol is still investigating the cause of the crash.
