MOSES LAKE - All second-year students in the Big Bend Community College automotive classes will have their own performance tool kits, thanks to Moses Lake Classic Car Club members.

For the third consecutive year, car club members donated $1,500 to purchase the kits, which cost about $170 each. Each kit includes an auto link scan tool (used in diagnosing electronic automobile ailments), light set, remote starter, wire tool, spark tester and fuel disconnect set.

Students "can use the tools in the program the rest of the year and get to keep them after that," automotive technology instructor Dick Wynder said. "They are performance tools the students need but not all of them can afford."

The car club used to donate money for a scholarship, club member Bob Kent said. "The tools turned out to benefit more students," he said. Tool kits are a "meaningful reward" for those students who have successfully negotiated the first year of the program, Wynder said.

With the donation "we get two things accomplished," Kent said in an earlier interview. "We support higher education and automotive students in higher education. And it's local."
