Blood drive ignites competition

PLAINS – The Plains High School joined Thompson Falls High School in a competition to collect the most blood through a drive.
The students in the JMG class hosted the event and senior Nicole Rehbein spearheaded the blood drive.
Rehbein was nominated as the civic coordinator and worked hard to provide a hospitality booth, a registration booth and also put together presentations for underclassmen about the blood drive.
“The presentation consisted of why you should donate blood, what it goes to and how to prepare yourself,” said Rehbein.
The drive was organized so two people could donate every 15 minutes and focused primarily on the school with both students and teachers donating blood.
Everyone who signed up for the blood drive showed up, however, Rehbein said some were unable to donate blood because of their iron levels.
The competition between the two schools was close and at the time of press, a winner had yet to be announced.
“We had 42 people present to donate and we had a total of 35 collected units of blood. We tied with units in Thompson but they haven’t done the percentages yet,” said Rehbein.
Because Thompson Falls has more students than Plains, a mathematical equation will level the playing field for the two schools.
In the spirit of competition, the two schools were able to join together for a unified cause – spreading blood and most importantly life to those who need it.
