PRESS: Stooped low on Opinions page

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 years, 4 months AGO
| December 11, 2013 8:00 PM

My husband and I have subscribed to The Press since we arrived in the Coeur d’Alene area in 1995. We subscribe so that we can be informed of local news. We also subscribe to the Wall Street Journal for national and international news.

Sunday’s Opinion page was so mean spirited and SO unnecessary, and we are extremely disappointed in you. We do not understand why a reputable newspaper would print any letter, whether it be sent directly to the editor or come by way of online blogs, without the person’s name attached to it. “Concerned Citizen,” “Samuelstanding,” “Heartstar25,” “Arius 1” and “Mahiun” should not have been printed without the author’s name as required by your own policy. Only cowards spew their hatred and then not sign their names.

I read Mary Souza’s “My Turn” article on Friday, Dec. 6, and did not find it whiney or mean-spirited. My question to you is, “what purpose did printing those ‘online’ letters serve?” I am so ashamed for you and The Press. In this season of Christmas and giving as you do with the Christmas for All, your Opinion page did nothing remotely kind or generous. In our opinion, you negated any good works you do with Christmas for All.

Will we cancel our subscription? Heavens no. But, are we proud of our local paper? NOT AT ALL. You know, Mr. Patrick, there is lots of talk in this town about bullying and it always refers to school children. In our opinion, The Press is one of the biggest bullies in this town. You beat anyone down if they do not agree with your position on any city matter.

What a sad little city Coeur d’Alene is. Fortunately, there are many, many good people who live here who overshadow the politics of this city.
