Seniors invited to tour Hockaday

Seniors 60 and older receive free admission to the Hockaday Museum of Art today for Senior Tour and Tea Day.

Complimentary coffee, tea and cookies will be served from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and one of the museum's trained volunteer docents will greet guests at the front desk area for an educational tour that begins at 10:30 a.m.

Guests at this month’s event will find an extension of the museum's upstairs permanent collection exhibition, called “Crown of the Continent Gallery Part Two.” The exhibition is a result of the museum’s permanent collection vault area receiving a much-needed art rack storage system, made possible with a grant received from the Seattle-based Murdock Foundation.

Construction of the art racks requires that all art and artifacts be removed and installed in the museum galleries. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to see what the Hockaday has acquired in its 45-year history. On view will be historical items of local and regional interest, including art and artifacts of Glacier National Park, the indigenous tribes of Montana, photographs, sculptures and more.

Continuing for December is the Hockaday’s annual exhibition of artist member works, the 2013 Members Salon, featuring recent art by more than 120 of the museum's artist members. Guests are invited to vote for their favorite piece in the People's Choice Awards, in which first prize is a solo exhibition in the Hockaday’s Community Access Gallery in fall 2014.

The first two fully restored Glacier National Park murals are on display. Both works were restored by Joe Abbrescia Jr. and depict iconic landscapes of Glacier Park.

The Crown of the Continent Gallery showcases the art and artists of Glacier National Park in the Hockaday’s permanent collection. Featured artists include John Fery, Nicholas Oberling, Mark Ogle, Leonard Lopp, O.C. Seltzer, C.M. Russell, T.J. Hileman, Ace Powell and Adolph Heinze.

Senior Tour and Tea Day is sponsored by the Daily Inter Lake, Medical Arts Pharmacy and Sykes’ Pharmacy in Kalispell.

The Hockaday is located at 302 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. A wheelchair-accessible entry and elevator are provided.
