Prep roundup Pfeiffer's hoop lifts Kootenai past Charter

COEUR d'ALENE - Jake Pfeiffer hit a go-ahead jumper with 25 seconds remaining to lift the Kootenai Warriors past the Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy Panthers 47-44 in a nonleague game Thursday night at Holy Family Catholic School.

"We're showing improvement, but down the stretch we made some mistakes late in the game," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Steve Bourgard said. "It was just some growing pains, but we're getting better."

Pfeiffer finished with 18 points, Anthony Ausman 17 for Kootenai (1-1), which faces Lakeside tonight in the opening round of the North Star League tournament in Plummer.

Christian Johnson had 18 points and Lewis Pennings had six rebounds for Coeur d'Alene Charter (0-5), which faces Alberton, Mont., in the opening round of the Tiger Tails Tournament tonight at 6:30 PST in St. Regis, Mont.

COLVILLE - Jake Ram and Tyrel Derrick scored 15 points apiece to lead the Hawks past the Indians in a nonleague game.

"We were able to move the ball pretty well and hit the open man on offense," Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. "They stayed with us and we really couldn't pull away from them."

Lakeland made 8 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Jay Plunkett scored 10 points for Lakeland (3-1), which travels to Pullman on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE - Guard Jeremiah Gagnon made a left-handed running layup with three seconds left to lift the visiting Bulldogs past the Tigers in nonleague play.

Keegan Scott hit a pull-up jumper with 18 seconds left in the game to put Timberlake (0-4) ahead, before Gagnon answered with his huge shot. Scott's 3-point attempt from nearly five feet beyond the 3-point line at the buzzer hit the front of the rim and bounced out.

Scott finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and two steals.

"I was proud of our guys," Timberlake coach Tony Hanna said. "It was an exciting game. We played against a good quality team. We just as easily could've folded it up, but they (Sandpoint) hit a huge shot at the end to finish it. It was a well-played game on both sides. They're going to be tough this year."

The Tigers made a furious comeback attempt after Sandpoint (3-1) led by as many as 12 points with three minutes left in the game. Mason Cramer finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Austin Allen had six points and four steals for Timberlake, which hosts Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., on Saturday.

"Colville's a good team," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "They've got a bunch of seniors and executed really well. We were up against a well-seasoned group of kids on their home floor and once they got up, it kind of snowballed on us. But Kaidan had a great game."

Kelly Ramus had six rebounds for Lakeland (3-6), which travels to Pullman on Saturday.

PLUMMER - Allison Kirby scored nine of her 14 points in the first quarter, and Keelie Lawler scored nine of her 13 in the first half for the visiting 3A Tigers in the nonleague win over the 1A Division I Knights.

"They're good shooters," Lakeside assistant coach Sheldon Pine said of Timberlake. "It seemed like everything they threw up went in, and everything we threw up didn't."

Avery Brown-Sonder scored eight points for Lakeside (3-4), which committed 23 turnovers.

Timberlake (4-2) plays host to Riverside on Saturday. Lakeside plays host to Kellogg on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - The Panthers' bigs came up big, as Sarah Haman had 15 points and 14 rebounds, and Jackie Jensen added 15 points and 10 boards in the nonleague victory over the visiting Warriors at Holy Family Catholic School.

Anna Verhaeghe added 12 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter (4-3), who pulled away in the fourth quarter after leading by three points after three quarters.

"We're handling the ball very well," Charter coach Doug Grant said. "He (Kootenai coach Mike LaFountaine) full-court pressed us most of the night, and we did a good job handling the basketball. We put on a zone press of our own in the fourth quarter, and got quite a few turnovers off of that."

Kaylee Carman scored 10 points for Kootenai (2-3), which travels to Wallace on Tuesday.

Coeur d'Alene Charter plays at St. Maries on Tuesday to open Central Idaho League play.

POST FALLS - Tyler Wolf of Post Falls pinned Will Putnam of Lakeland in 3 minutes, 16 seconds as part of the Trojans' runaway victory at The Arena.

"The main thing was our kids did a really nice job putting kids on their back," Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. "When we had an opportunity to pin kids, we did. That's a real good testament for our kids. We preach that when you have an opportunity to finish someone off, you've got to capitalize."

Post Falls 106-pounder Cierra Foster won her match won by decision, 5-0, for the Trojans (2-1).

"She gutted out a tough win for us," Reardon said. "She did a really good job."

In the 195-pound match, Ryan Failor won by pin at 3:08 into the match against the Hawks, who were in their season opener.

Post Falls and Lakeland will wrestle in the Inland Empire Classic today and Saturday at Central Valley.

BOISE - Coeur d'Alene beat Eagle 65-21, but came up short against host Borah, 46-32, in a double dual at Borah High.

"We lost the first couple against Eagle and we got on a roll," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "Against Borah, I thought we wrestled real tough. We were right in the match. Borah is one of the best teams in the state and we went toe-to-toe with them. I thought we wrestled real tough."

Jason Sprague of Coeur d'Alene (2-2) won by pin in both of his 145-pound matches.

Coeur d'Alene wrestles Friday and Saturday in the Buck's Bags tournament at Capital High in Boise.
