"Traditions of Christmas," a Radio City Music Hall-style holiday spectacular featuring Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke in the role of Mrs. Claus, opened Thursday in Coeur d'Alene.

Audiences can see the show Thursdays through Sundays through Dec. 23 at the Salvation Army Kroc Center, 1765 W. Golf Course Road.

Like last year's "Traditions of Christmas," the show is produced by Laura Little Theatricals. The large cast of 80 includes a lot of local talent.

A USO segment, including a tribute to those who have served in the military, is one of Little's favorite parts of the show.

"It just brings me to tears every time I see it, even in rehearsal," she said.

Audience members who have been in the military are acknowledged during this part of the show, Little said. They are asked to stand during the tribute. Those who rise are young and old, she said, ranging from older veterans in the handicapped section to younger, active service persons who are home in North Idaho for the holidays.

Patty Duke's participation in this year's "Traditions of Christmas" show has added another special element to the production, Little said.

Duke, an area resident with a distinguished, six-decade career in television, film and theater, is one of Little's neighbors in Kootenai County. Duke, in the role of Mrs. Claus, appears opposite her husband, Mike Pearce, who plays the role of Santa.

"It's been fun watching her because she's not typically a singer or a dancer. She actually dances with the Rockettes at one point," Little said. "Her husband, Mike, is just a great neighbor, and we get to see him in a role. To watch them work together has been fun for all of us."

The show concludes with a Living Nativity scene, with a donkey, sheep and a chorus of angels.

"Traditions of Christmas" is appropriate for ages 4 and older; organizers request "no babes in arms."

Ticket prices are $33/adults, $26/military and seniors (62-plus), $20/children 12 and younger. Group rates and hotel packages are available.

For tickets and information, call (208) 391-2867 or visit www.traditionsofchristmsnw.com or in person, 1323 Sherman Ave., Coeur d'Alene.
