• Tin foil tips off shop employee to burglary

COEUR d'ALENE - An area thrift shop's security was foiled by foil on Thursday morning.

When an employee opened Coeur d'Alene Homes Auxiliary Thrift Store, 501 E. Lakeside Ave., she discovered a small piece of foil balled up in the lock of the back door. Upon entering the store, she saw that someone had disturbed several items.

"There were donated items that had been dumped out of a paper box and were laying in the middle of the hallway," the Coeur d'Alene Police Department report states. "A power cord and two lightbulbs were removed from a box in the back room and were laying on the floor near a bed frame."

Other items, such as the store's computer, were taken.

According to the incident report, the computer is valued at approximately $300. The monitor and keyboard were left behind.

The employee told police she believes there may be more items missing from the store.

"She believes the suspect was a customer who placed the foil in the door, but could not provide any further information," the police report states.

• Boise man gets a year in jail for hit-and-run

BOISE (AP) - A 20-year-old Boise man who pleaded guilty to charges filed in a hit-and-run crash that left a man hospitalized for three months has been sentenced to a year in the Ada County jail.

Fourth District Judge Patrick Owen sentenced John Taylor French on Friday for misdemeanor reckless driving and withheld judgment on two felonies - leaving the scene of an accident and destruction or alteration of evidence. French was fined more than $2,400 and his driver's license was suspended for three years.

Prosecutors say French drove off after the Aug. 24 collision and that he swapped out the damaged hood on his vehicle and changed a broken headlight.

The victim, Alan Beavers, 24, of Garden City, was in a coma for almost a month and faces nearly $500,000 in medical bills.
