Staging for kids

POST FALLS - A man with a big white beard and jolly red hat pushed a shopping cart full of toys for kids down the aisle at Walmart. Santa?
Nope. A biker from Post Falls.
Tom Taylor was among the members of the motorcycle rights nonprofit ABATE (American Bikers Aiming Toward Education) of North Idaho who shopped for kids in need on Wednesday night at the Walmart on Mullan Avenue.
ABATE raised $3,700 this year to benefit the Marine Corps League's Toys for Tots program.
"You do it for the kids," Taylor said while taking a break from shopping. "There's a lot of kids out there who wouldn't get a Christmas if it wasn't for this."
Ron Bell, Toys for Tots coordinator, said the effort is annually one of the largest for the program.
"It really helps us out," Bell said.
Bell said about 800 local families have signed up for assistance through Toys for Tots this year.
The money was raised during ABATE's Toy Run in October, soliciting donations at Super 1 Foods and a raffle. This is the 24th year ABATE has assisted the youth program.
"This is our chapter project for the community for the year," said Paul Reiss, ABATE member.
With some dressed in leathers and motorcycle caps, ABATE members assembled at the front of the store with carts and a gift list provided by Toys for Tots, and set out for the toy aisles.
"We know there are still a lot of folks out there in need," Reiss said. "This is our chance to help out with that. You can't fix the world, but we can start at home."
ABATE member Laura Ingalls added: "There's more and more people who meet the (assistance) criteria. This is where we fill in the gap."
When ABATE members were finished shopping and made it through the checkout stand, Marine Corps League members accepted the toys and hauled them to their warehouse for distribution.
"Bikers are some of the kindest people you'll meet," Reiss said. "Yes, you'll find 1 percent or less out there who aren't nice, but, as a rule, they're some of the most outgoing and helpful people you'll find."
