A Kalispell man with an extensive criminal history of exposing himself to women has pleaded not guilty to a new indecent exposure charge.

Russell Gordon Davenport, 49, is accused of committing the most recent crime while on parole from his last offense.

Davenport entered his plea to the felony charge Thursday in Flathead District Court.

A court document alleges Davenport entered the Guns and Glamour salon in Kalispell, identifying himself as John James and asking about body wraps and massages. An employee said he asked multiple times if he could be naked during the sessions, even after being repeatedly told he could not.

Another employee said she booked Davenport for a June 20 appointment under the false name, and said that prior to the session beginning he told her, “I was told I could be naked,” at which point she reaffirmed that he could not.

During the session, Davenport allegedly disregarded his instructions and repeatedly exposed himself. The employee said she was afraid Davenport was going to sexually assault her. An officer who spoke with the employee later said she was “visibly shaken.”

Davenport has been convicted of seven counts of indecent exposure in the past: three misdemeanor counts in October 1996 and felony counts in 2004, 2007 and 2009.

The 2009 conviction came as the result of Davenport exposing himself to his tenant.

The woman later told police she greatly feared Davenport.

He was convicted after entering a no-contest plea so he could receive a suspended sentence.

Davenport was given a 10-year suspended sentence for the 2007 conviction, a sentence that was revoked when he was convicted in 2009. He was sent to prison for five years to be followed by five years of probation, followed by a new eight-year suspended sentence.

Less than one year into his prison sentence, however, Davenport was granted parole. His counselors in the prison told the Montana Board of Pardons and Parole they believed Davenport should be afforded the opportunity to re-enter the community and continue his treatment there.

As part of the 2009 sentence, Davenport also was designated a Tier II sexual offender, indicating a moderate risk of reoffending.
