Strength in numbers not necessary

It's not like the Idaho state wrestling tournament, where if you can get 20 wrestlers in, you've got a good chance at a team title.

But it doesn't hurt.

Post Falls junior Seth McLeod (170 pounds) and Coeur d'Alene senior Matt James (285) are among the No. 1 seeds for the 42nd annual Tri-State Invitational, which runs today and Saturday at Christianson Gymnasium on the campus of North Idaho College.

Ten returning champions are mixed among 15 different weight divisions, including local champion Alius De La Rosa (120) of Post Falls High.

"I'm not sure if we've got any more returners than any other tournament," said tournament organizer and NIC wrestling coach Pat Whitcomb. "This is where those freshmen and sophomores look to place at. Every year, we've got defending champions that get upset - and that's Tri-State."

The 126-pound class has four returning champions.

"That's going to be an awfully tough draw," Whitcomb said. "Both (Drake) Foster (of Post Falls) and (Isaac) Aguilar (of Hermiston) are really good, and it's going to be tough in there. Each match is going to be a battle. Any of the top three (seeds) really could win it."

Whitcomb added that he's looking forward to seeing competition at 138 and 145 pounds.

"I'm thinking 145 will be another good one," Whitcomb said. "Everyone from (Drake) Randall (from Lewiston, seeded fifth at 145) can win it. It's not going to be a weak weight."

Hermiston (Ore.) won last year's team championship, and is favored to win again this year, Whitcomb said. Oregon City won the small school championship after finishing 16th. Post Falls was the top local finisher in ninth. The Trojans were third in 2011.

"Post Falls has been right in the middle of things the last two years," Whitcomb said. "If they can get things rolling and can stick some kids in the finals. It's definitely not like the Idaho state tournament where you need 20 guys to win the thing."

The tournament begins today at 10 a.m. and continues Saturday at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with championship finals at 6 p.m.

The finals will be preceded at 5:30 by the dedication of North Idaho College's wrestling room to former Cardinal wrestling coach John Owen, who led NIC to eight NJCAA titles and 17 top three national finishes in his 20-year coaching stint with the Cardinals. Owen is currently coach at Central Valley High in Spokane.

All-session passes for the tournament are $25 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
