Wolfpack cruises by Whitefish in girls basketball

WHITEFISH — The Glacier girls ran away with a 61-5 victory over Whitefish in an inter-class basketball game Friday at Whitefish High School.
Class AA Glacier ended the first half on a 38-0 run to take a 42-2 lead into the locker room, and the entire second half was played with a running clock because Glacier’s lead exceeded 39 points.
Class A Whitefish’s 2-3 zone was no match for 6-foot-1 Glacier center Cassi Hashley, who wore the paint off the low blocks but also showed some range in the second quarter when she stepped out and hit a 15-foot jumper. She finished with a game-high 21 points. Taylor Loomis scored 12 and Katie Thomas had 10, including Glacier’s only 3-pointer.
“We wanted to focus on our offense, running things and being patient,” Hashley said.
“So I think we did a good job with that and running our plays. I’m really happy with everybody.”
Glacier led 4-0 when Whitefish guard Simone Craft knocked down a mid-range jumper to cut the deficit. A steal by Hailee Bennett led to a transition layup for Hashley at the other end and that became a recurring theme in the first half as Glacier (2-0) feasted on 29 Whitefish (0-4) turnovers and held the Bulldogs to just four field goal attempts.
“We get three games before Christmas break and that’s it,” Glacier coach Kris Salonen said. “We just think, no matter what, we’re going to work hard to get better as a team and just work on the things we need to work to execute.
“And we hope in turn that Whitefish can do the same thing. They can work on things that they can get better on so they can get better for the conference (schedule).”
Glacier scored 19 points in the second half, and while the running clock accounted for the most of the reduced output, the Bulldogs had more active hands on defense, which resulted in a few deflected passes and Glacier turnovers.
“Our defensive rotation was really good in the second half,” Whitefish coach Clint Peters said.
Whitefish also improved on the offensive end with nine second-half possessions that ended in shot attempts compared to seven turnovers.
“Part of that is the maturity process,” Peters said.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction, it’s just baby steps right now.”
Fewer turnovers meant more half-court offense for Glacier, and Salonen was pleased with her team’s execution.
“I didn’t want to get a lot of layups tonight,” she said. “I wanted us to really execute and run our offense. We ran some great looks, got great shots out of it, got work for our posts and our guards. It was good to see that my guards can shoot the ball from the perimeter.”
Allie Schulz drained a 3-pointer for Whitefish to finish as the team’s leader with three points.
