COEUR d'ALENE - Christmas is not always the most wonderful time of the year.

It can be depressing and lonely for those who are isolated or distanced from their loved ones. Some may dread the chaos and commercialism, while others may simply choose to be alone and ignore the festivities.

St. Luke Episcopal Church is hosting a Blue Christmas/Longest Night ceremony in recognition of those who may be experiencing a less than joyous holiday season.

"We want to let people know they're not alone," said St. Luke communication coordinator Carolyn Alberts of Coeur d'Alene. "This is a time to reflect and get some of the joy that is there, in spite of whatever problems they may be experiencing."

The ceremony will provide attendees with a moment of peace and reflection. Candles will be lit for grief, memories, love and courage. People can light candles to let go of their burdens. A few passages from the New Testament will also be read.

Event co-organizer Andy Storjohann of Rathdrum lost her husband just after Thanksgiving 10 years ago. It took her a long time to get through the pain, and she said an event like Blue Christmas/Longest night gives people a chance to know it's all right to feel sad this time of year.

"There's a lot of people (for whom) Christmas is not a happy, joyous time," she said. "It gives people a chance to say it's OK to feel that way."

The service is held on the winter solstice to represent the longest night of the year. It begins at 5:30 this evening in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, located at 501 E. Wallace Ave. in Coeur d'Alene. Info: www.stlukescda.org or call 664-5533.
