Cd'A wraps up election issues

COEUR d'ALENE - Coeur d'Alene City Attorney Mike Gridley said on Friday that he wrapped up a number of investigations related to last month's city elections.
"For the most part, everyone has come into compliance," Gridley said, explaining that was the city's goal in the first place.
Gridley investigated several complaints of election misconduct, but most of those cases involved campaign finance reporting errors that the city was able to correct.
"There was one complaint about the Unfit for Mayor website that went up briefly before it was taken down," Gridley said. "I talked with the (attorney general's) office about it and we determined it was a de minimis deal."
Gridley said the Ocean of Life Foundation still has not contacted his office concerning statements foundation director Tom Wold made to The Press about concealing donations he made anonymously to candidates during the election.
"I am going to talk with the city prosecutor about it, but I am not sure at this point what we will do with that one," he said. "At some point it gets down to 'were the election laws complied with.'"
Campaign finance disclosure laws are designed to show the public who is donating money to the candidates, Gridley explained. The fine for violating that law is $250.
In the case of the Ocean of Life Foundation, Wold initially tried to donate $1,000 to mayoral candidate Mary Souza's campaign anonymously. Souza later returned the donation and Wold issued another check in his name.
"At the end of the day, he was in compliance," Gridley said. "On the other hand, he did say he made more anonymous donations, but we haven't found any evidence of that.
"It's hard to prove something like that," he added. "The goal is to let voters know who is contributing to the campaigns, and I think we know that now."
