COEUR d'ALENE - One false move, and it's over in wrestling.
For a pair of Post Falls High wrestlers, one mistake in an otherwise flawless weekend cost them under the spotlight of the Tri-State Invitational on Saturday night at North Idaho College.
Post Falls junior Drake Foster, wrestling in his second final in three years, lost to Fred Green of Orting (Wash.) 13-5 in the 126 pound championship match.
"(Post Falls) Coach (Pete Reardon) and I talked about not overlooking anyone, and I kind of did a little bit," Foster said. "So if that's one thing I take away from this weekend, it's not to overlook anyone."
For Post Falls junior Seth McLeod, it was the same story.
In a tie-up, senior Jacen Petersen from Mission High in St. Ignatius, Mont., took down McLeod less than a minute into the first period and eventually won by pin in 1:06.
"I wrestled a bit of his match," McLeod said. "I tied up with him up top, and that was stupid. Next time, I need to go out and do what I do and wrestle my match."
Green led 5-4 after the second period, but an attempted takedown by Foster nearly resulted in a pin for Green, who went on to score eight points, six on near-fall points.
"My game plan was that I knew I was better on my feet than him," said Foster, who finished fourth at Tri-State last year. "But he's a good wrestler. I kind of went for the big move when I didn't have to instead of going for a regular takedown. I was definitely not in as good of condition as I should have been. I need to work a little harder in the (wrestling) room and start fixing that one crucial mistake to make my matches flawless."
Foster pinned Dylan Schulte of Sentinel High in Missoula in 1:14 in the semifinals to advance to the finals.
"I wrestled a lot better than I had the last two years," said Foster, who also placed second in 2011. "Hopefully from this I'll learn and grow as a person and wrestler."
Petersen was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. McLeod, who was seventh at Tri-State as a freshman, helped the Trojans finish seventh with 117.5 points.
"My goal was to win the match," McLeod said. "It's annoying having to wrestle a kid like that. You know what he's going to do and know you're a better wrestler, but he tries a it (a takedown), hits it, and gets you with it."
McLeod beat Tanner Fischer of Oregon City by an 8-2 decision in their 170-pound semifinal.
Post Falls sophomore Alius De La Rosa, who won last year's 106-pound championship, finished fifth on Saturday after pinning Collin Atchinson of Tonasket in 2:48. T.J. Wolf placed seventh at 138 for Post Falls.
"Overall, I thought we did OK," Reardon said. "We wanted to get a trophy (top-four finish) as a team, and thought we were capable of getting a trophy if we had wrestled a little better. We've got a lot to work on and a lot of guys that are ready to turn the corner, but need to do some improving."
Coeur d'Alene senior Matt James lost in his 285-pound semifinal to Tate Orndorff of University, then finished third after beating Justin Farnsworth of Post Falls 1-0 and J.C. English of Kuna by pin in 3:15. Farnsworth finished fifth.
Coeur d'Alene senior Phoenix Duncan (195) lost his semifinal to top-seeded Samuel Colbray of Hermiston (Ore.) by pin in 2:29, then beat Sam Lindsey of Auburn 3-2 decision before losing to Ciaran Bell of Meadowdale in the third place-match to finish fourth.
Coeur d'Alene freshman Mikey Kelley, who lost by pin to Trevor Rigney of Lewiston in the semifinals, finished fifth after losing to Caleb Bagnell of Frenchtown by pin in 1:39. Viking teammate Kaleb Maciosek (98) finished fourth.
Junior Killian Estes of Lakeland lost a 7-6 decision to Jordan Nolan of Kuna in the 182 semifinals, then beat Adam Hokenson of Tahoa by pin in 1:20 and won via injury default to finish third. Tyson Hendricks (113) finished sixth for Lakeland.
Josh Travers finished seventh at 220 for Sandpoint.
Kuna ran away with the team championship, finishing with 193 points. Lewiston was second with 143 and Lake Stevens (Wash.) third with 141.
Orting won the small-school title after finishing 15th.
