Eagle Watch Week kicks off Dec. 26

Beginning the day after Christmas, the Bureau of Land Management will once again partner with Idaho Department of Fish and Game to host Eagle Watch Week. From Dec. 26 through Dec. 30, eagle "ambassadors" from both agencies will be at viewing spots at the east end of Lake Coeur d'Alene to answer questions about bald eagles, their lifestyles and habits, and assist visitors with high-powered spotting scopes.

The experts will be at the BLM's Mineral Ridge boat launch or trailhead, along Highway 97. The agency is reminding travelers to use caution when driving, parking or walking along the highway, since hundreds of viewers travel to the spot each year to view the raptors.

"The travel way is not restricted, and pedestrians should be respectful of drivers by not walking in the center of the road or using the shoulder to scout for eagles," states a press release.

Severe weather, especially high wind, could affect the enhanced eagle watching events, so the BLM has set up an "Eagle Watch Hotline." An updated status will be available by calling (208) 769-5048 after 9 a.m. each day.
