Flathead history presented in museum series

The Museum at Central School will host the 12th annual John White Lecture Series in January and February. The series honors John White, the son of a Texas slave who became a central figure in the history of Central School. Lectures include:

• Jan. 12 — Five long-time Valley residents reflect on their “Memories of Flathead Valley History,” including Sylvia Murphy, Bob O’Neil, Rand Robbin, Peter Larson and Sheryl Lautherback.

• Jan. 26 — Local author and climber Blake Passmore will talk about “Climbing in Glacier Park.”

• Feb. 9 — Philip Burgess will use his poetry and storytelling skills to describe a black family’s experience as early settlers in the Missouri River valley of eastern Montana in “A Black Homesteader’s Struggle.”

• Feb. 23 — Three sons of former Flathead County sheriffs will share their memories and experiences in “Sons of Sheriffs,” including retired attorney Ty Robinson, son of Cal Robinson Sr.; retired deputy Pat Walsh, son of Dick Walsh; and retired schoolteacher Larry Wilson, son of Ross Wilson.

All lectures will take place upstairs at the museum, 124 Second Avenue East, in Kalispell, on Sundays starting at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the museum or half an hour before each event at $9 general public or $6 museum members. Tickets for the complete series are $30 general public or $20 museum members. Call 756-8381 for more information.

A bill requiring the state to electronically verify that all foreign nationals are in the U.S. legally before issuing a Montana driver’s license or ID card was signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer on April 18.

Uphill skiers need to be aware of avalanches on Big Mtn.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
